Uniform and Shoes Initiative

A school uniform is more than a shirt and a pair of trousers, a skirt, or a dress.

A pair of shoes is more than something worn on a child’s feet.

For a student, these simple necessities can mean dignity, confidence, belonging—and the ability to show up mentally ready to learn.

Across Liberia, there are hardworking parents and caregivers doing everything they can to keep their children in school. But when a family’s resources are stretched between food, housing, transportation, school fees, and other everyday necessities, purchasing a new uniform or replacing a worn pair of shoes can become another difficult expense.

And children feel that struggle too.

A uniform that has become too small. Shoes that are worn through and sometimes barely fit. A child watching classmates arrive sharply dress, in new crisp uniform, while all the time, quietly worrying about what their visibly worn-out uniform looked like even though they had taken so much care to wash it twice in bleach, add some starch and carefully ironed it to perfect smoothness. 

These may seem like small things, but for a moment, put yourself in that child’s shoe and you too will understand or maybe even remember exactly what these children feels.

It’s About More Than What They Wear

There is something special about watching a child put on a proper school uniform.

The shirt is tucked in.

The shoes fit.

The backpack is ready.

And suddenly, they stand a little taller.

That moment is what this initiative is really about.

We want students to walk into their classrooms focused on the lesson ahead—not distracted by embarrassment, discomfort, or the worry that they don’t have what they need to belong.

Providing uniforms and shoes may not solve every challenge a student faces, but it can remove one very visible barrier.

It says:

You belong here.

You deserve to be here.

And your education is worth investing in.
